MSCR Asphalt Testing

Asphalt Lab Equipment

Meeting MSCR Requirements

Listed on DOT specifications across more than 30 U.S. states, the Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery (MSCR) test method has emerged as the most prevalent approach for assessing High Temperature Performance Grading of Asphalt.

Recent studies by Innophos’ technical experts have demonstrated that pairing INNOVALT® Polyphosphoric Acid (PPA) with Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) can help you meet MSCR asphalt testing specifications and significantly reduce the amount of polymer. This combination enhances overall cost efficiency and streamlines processing.

About MSCR

What is MSCR Testing?
The Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR) test is an advanced procedure used to evaluate the potential for permanent deformation in asphalt binders. It is part of the Superpave Performance Graded (PG) Asphalt Binder specification and provides a more accurate indication of an asphalt binder's rutting performance at high temperatures.

What is Jnr?
MSCR incorporates the Jnr value (non-recoverable creep compliance), enabling it to account for slow-moving and high-traffic conditions. Classified into four distinct grades—Standard (S), Heavy (H), Very Heavy (V), and Extreme (E)—the Jnr specification decreases with each ascending grade.

What is % Recovery?
Many states also include a % Recovery specification which measures how well an asphalt binder returns to its original shape after being subjected to a load or stress. This increases with ascending grade and indicates the quality of the polymer network.

Optimized Asphalt Solutions

The benefits of using INNOVALT® PPA + SBS highlight our commitment to enhancing asphalt binder performance while reducing the overall additive amount.

As the industry continues to evolve, Innophos remains at the forefront, providing solutions that meet stringent MSCR specifications and contribute to the development of durable, high-performance pavements.
